Understanding the Signs of Pain in Pets
Pets are incredibly good at hiding discomfort. As loving owners, it can be difficult to know when our furry friends are truly in pain. Recognising the signs early helps you manage their wellbeing — and sometimes guides the difficult decision of when to consider pet euthanasia.
Common signs of pain in dogs and cats
Changes in appetite – refusing food, drinking less, or struggling to eat.
Altered behaviour – withdrawing, hiding, or becoming unusually clingy.
Restlessness or difficulty settling – pacing, panting, or constantly changing position.
Mobility problems – limping, stiffness, reluctance to climb stairs or go for walks.
Vocalisation – whining, crying, or unusual meowing.
Changes in grooming – over-grooming sore areas, or a lack of grooming altogether.
When to seek veterinary advice
If you notice several of these signs, it’s important to talk to your vet. They can assess pain levels and suggest medication, lifestyle adjustments, or — if suffering is ongoing — guide you on whether it may be time to consider a peaceful goodbye.
The kindest choice
Recognising pain is never easy, but taking action ensures your pet doesn’t continue to suffer. Being proactive is one of the greatest acts of love we can show our companions.
